Soft Light Umbrella and Reflective Umbrella

Because there are so many forms, the choice of soft umbrella is not an easy task. Let’s start with my favorite silver soft umbrella.

This soft light umbrella contains two reflective materials, silver and white. The silver side is used to create more contrast and harder light. When the light passes through the white cloth, the light is further softened. Therefore, this soft light umbrella not only guarantees a certain contrast, but also does not make the light too hard.

The biggest advantage of the soft umbrella over other tools is that it can be quickly accessed and does not take up much space when folded. The size of the soft light umbrella is more diverse, ranging from 75cm to 1.8m. I personally recommend the 95cm size. If you want to use 1.8m, you must have a larger studio.

Of course, you can also choose a pure silver soft light umbrella or a white soft light umbrella. Like the previous two tools, silver is used to shoot high-contrast, bright and dark effects. White is used to soften the light to the greatest extent, creating a soft-looking portrait.

Ring Flash

The ring flash surrounds the camera lens, and the shadows are not very noticeable. It can also make a ring-shaped catch light, which is more dreamy, and can be used in conjunction with other lighting methods.

Softbox

Softbox is also one of the most commonly used tools in shooting. In addition to the shapes shown in the figure, there are also square, rectangular, octagonal, etc. The larger the softbox, the more scattered the light will be.

Long Soft Box

The long-striped soft box, if used to shoot the whole body, the light will be more average than simply using the square soft box.

Portrait Photography Angle

The shooting angle includes shooting direction and shooting angle. The choice of shooting angle is very important in portrait photography. Different shooting angles will have different effects on the image and charm of the subject. Beginners should pay attention to the personality characteristics of the characters when taking portrait photography, so as to choose the appropriate shooting angle.

1. Front

Frontal refers to the subject’s face facing the camera, at a zero angle to the lens. For frontal half-length portraits, this shooting angle will focus on the facial contours of the characters, giving people a dignified, steady, symmetrical and harmonious feeling, and at the same time enhance the realism of the characters. Photographers should note that for subjects with obvious asymmetry in facial features, they need to avoid frontal angle shots.

2. 1/3 Side

1/3 side refers to the angle between the face and the camera lens of about 30°. This shooting angle can improve the overly symmetrical and dull frontal situation, and make the photos look more relaxed and lively. 3. 2/3 Side

5. Aerial Shot

Another more complicated argument for contrast is light ratio. Generally speaking, after adjusting the main light, we will adjust the contrast (that is, the light ratio).

Generally speaking, if the light metering value of the bright part and the light metering value of the dark part are different by 1 EV value, we will say that the light ratio at this time is 1:2. If the metering value differs by 2 EV values, it will be said that the light ratio at this time is 1:4. And if it is 3 EV values, it will be said to be 1:8. In the same way, if the difference is 4EV, it will be said that the light ratio is 1:16.

You will find that the ratio of light is the number of powers of 2 added and multiplied. The greater the number difference, the greater the difference in brightness between the bright side and the dark side.

The figure below is an example. Although it was taken on the background paper, because it is a relatively flexible product, we will not use too much contrast to take this photo. Instead, we chose a lower contrast to highlight the soft feeling we want.

Difference in EV Value

Light ratio 1:8 VS light ratio 1:16

In fact, the contrast (light ratio) of the two photos on the protagonist’s face is not much worse. The first one is about 1:6, and the second one is about 1:4. As far as the light ratio is concerned, the control of the dark part is only one EV value worse, but it feels a lot worse. So before talking about basic lighting, we must understand what light ratio is, something that we often encounter when shooting outside.

Light ratio 1:2 VS light ratio 1:4

High contrast: light ratio 1:8

The so-called 1 EV value means that when we meter in the bright part, if the correct exposure is f/8, and the meter in the dark part is one aperture value (that is, f/5.6) different from the bright part. Of exposure. Such an exposure with a difference of one aperture value is said to be a difference of 1 EV.

Low contrast: light ratio 1:2

We can see from the figure below that when the light ratio is 1:2, the difference between the bright part and the dark part is only one aperture/EV value. Therefore, there is almost no contrast on the model’s face, and the light feels relatively flat. Sometimes when we take photos, we feel that such photos are less sexy. But if you are shooting some products with heavy faces, such a sense of light is more commonly used. Mainly because there is no shadow, it will not steal the elegance of other products.

In addition, if it is in a relatively soft light environment, such a light ratio is easier to appear. The picture below is the light emitted by a relatively soft light environment. Because it is already a relatively large-area soft light method, a lot of diffused light will surround the shooting environment, so there will also be a situation where the light ratio may be 1:1. We will have a softer feeling in such photos. So when we shoot more feminine products, we also use this light ratio.

High contrast: light ratio 1:8

Let’s look again, if it is in the light ratio of 1:8 (the bright part and the dark part are four aperture/EV value difference), we can clearly distinguish where the shadow is. And below this light ratio, we will use it more in a more sexy shooting situation. Since it is a more personalized model, we will use this relatively high-contrast method to shoot. The picture on the right below is also an example of high contrast, mainly because the scene is also more personalized, so we will use this contrast value to shoot.

High contrast: light ratio 1:16

We also noticed that if the contrast reaches 1:16, the details may no longer be visible in the dark. In fact, if you are using negatives, perhaps such a contrast can still show the difference in details. Only if it is used in a digital camera, because we know that the latitude of a digital camera is not higher than that of a negative film. Although we can pull out some details by reducing the contrast, the picture will be gray and not very high-definition. Therefore, on the digital body, we rarely use the situation above 1:16.

Another reason is that it is more difficult to light up in the shed if it has to bring out a bigger contrast. Unless you are in a black shed that does not reflect light, it is possible to achieve this situation relatively simply.

Three Ways to Control Light Contrast

Sometimes we will find that the use of light is not so easy. Especially when shooting landscapes. The part where the sun shines is very bright, and the part that does not shine is very dark. Although the contrast between light and dark can make the work look more three-dimensional, too much contrast will cause difficulties in exposure, such as sunrise or sunset. Contrast control is extremely important at this time. Take the morning twilight as an example, there are three solutions to reduce the contrast.

HDR synthesis production

Due to the low tolerance of the camera’s photosensitive components, there is no way to reproduce the high-contrast details seen by the human eye. HDR (High Dymanic Range) refers to high dynamic range images, usually depending on the scene environment, through exposure bracketing to shoot 3-5 images with different exposure values ​​(such as 2EV, -1EV, 0EV, +1EV, +2EV) ), then synthesize. Used to shoot the morning and dusk, you can get a picture of the sky will not be overexposed, and the ground will not become a piece of black.

HDR photos usually give people a fake feeling. In fact, this depends on the proficiency and aesthetics of each person’s software operation. Some people like heavy flavors, while others can make HDR very natural. In addition, many cameras now have a built-in HDR function, which automatically shoots 3 images with different exposure values ​​for synthesis, which is very convenient. But the effect is not satisfactory. Therefore, if you are interested in HDR, it is better to work hard on the software post-production part.

Gradient dimmer

Gradient dimmer is a kind of filter lens, the light transmission from top to bottom decreases from full light transmission. The usage method is as follows: write down the value measured in the dark part, set the camera to manual exposure, and then use the measured value as the exposure value. When shooting, the camera must be fixed on the tripod, which is better for operation. Pick up the gradient filter and cover the over-bright part of the screen with the less light-transmitting part of the gradient. The intention is to reduce the exposure of the bright parts so that the contrast is not so big, so as to take an ideal photo (as shown below).

Shake the black card

The origin of the black card is untestable, but it is certain that it was invented by Taiwanese photographers, and it is not available in the world. Its purpose is very simple, it is to reduce the exposure of bright parts. It can be a piece of black hard cardboard, or it can be loaded with black gloves to cover the bright parts. Since it does not have a gradation like the aforementioned dimmer, it must be shaken up and down or left and right during exposure to avoid a black mark.

The method of use is very simple. The light is metered in the dark part first, and the exposure value is used to shoot. Then look through the viewing window or from the LiveView. The black card first aligns to cover the bright part, and then starts to shake after pressing the shutter, and then quickly pulls away before the shutter closes.

Remember, long time is better than short time. Therefore, depending on the amount of light, photographers often use the ND filter. When you start to shake, you have to count the time silently in your heart. And you must pull away before the shutter closes so that there will be no traces of black cards. Of course, we must fix the camera tightly on the tripod, and practice hard to be handy.

Use of spot metering

When shooting scenery outdoors, the control of contrast can be solved by the above-mentioned methods. If the contrast is not that great, in general, use weighing metering. But if you are worried about misjudgment of metering (for example, there is a large area of white or dark areas in the screen), you can use spot metering to take an ideal photo. Based on the experience of photographers, the following figure uses the spot metering mode to measure the midtones. And then add 0.5 to the EV value, so that the bright parts will not be overexposed. And the dark parts will not be underexposed.

Agility

Although not all softboxes are the same, softboxes are more capable of rendering diffuse light, unless you are using a umbrella with huge size such as 8`. Softbox and reflective umbrella

Let’s briefly discuss the difference between a reflector umbrella and a softbox, because many photographers have put forward many different opinions on the old spare diffuser umbrella.

Reflective umbrellas are very easy to install, there is no doubt that, the mounting holes of these loops can be snapped into place without tension, although softbox manufacturers like ARRI have always come up with quick loops with connecting loops. Regardless of the size of the softbox and reflector, they can condense and focus the 180-degree beam angle of the light source. When used at the same distance, a larger reflector umbrella will have a larger beam angle than a smaller diffuser umbrella. Therefore, it is very important to match the size of the subject to the size of the object. In any case, the beam angle of the diffuser is about 135 degrees, and it is difficult to accommodate a lot of so-called “overflow light.”

Reflective umbrellas have many advantages, including they can form circular spotlights in the eyes of portrait subjects-rectangular reflections look less natural (unless you want to replicate the light from a window). On the other hand, softboxes do contain lights, and I think it’s hard to question that they are much better than diffusers. Their beam angle is about 90 degrees, and they work right out of the box. Overflowing light is greatly reduced, and it is easier to guide light than a wider diffuser. In actual production, major softbox manufacturers will produce optional honeycomb grids to reduce the beam spread to 50 degrees, 45 degrees or even 10 degrees. Shape classification of soft box

square

This shape is the favorite of portrait studios and is suitable for most shooting scenes, although full length shooting will be reduced, and the rendering of the spotlight is very similar to a long rectangle. The square softbox is very suitable for low-ceiling shooting spaces, whose shape is very suitable for small groups and head and shoulder portraits.

Rectangle

Most people think of this kind of rectangular softbox when they say “softbox”. The longer side is usually ideal for full-length portraits and vertical composition. Many softboxes have a fixed speed ring that can be rotated, so you can adjust the direction of the frame in landscape mode to get a wider horizontal coverage. The rectangular soft box projects window-like highlights on reflective objects, however, the spotlight it creates in the eyes of portrait subjects is not ideal.

Long strip

The long strip box can also present a pleasing soft light, but it can be better closed and aimed at the target than the standard rectangular, square or octagonal wide sink. The size of the rectangular soft box is approximately 1:1.3 (the ratio of the short side to the long side), and the strip storage area is approximately 1:4, making it very suitable for edge or edge lighting to separate the object from the background and on top The lighting of individuals or groups depends on the size of the softbox. Long strip shape also makes it easy to illuminate the background from above or below, and makes it easier to create “gradient” backgrounds for product shooting. In glassware and other reflective objects, the ribbon-shaped levee creates long and elegant highlights.

Fabric mesh

This is currently the best softbox accessory on the market. When not in use, the fabric grid can be folded flat, and while maintaining soft light quality and manageable contrast, it reduces the spread of the beam. The grid has 20-degree, 30-degree, 40-degree and 60-degree extensions. Directional control and overflow light control can be added to make it very useful. It can be used as a side light or light on a boom just blocked by an umbrella. When the grid is used as the main light source, it can well isolate the subject from the background, thus presenting an elegant painting style.

The size of the soft box

The basis for choosing the size of the softbox is the coverage required by the subject and the quality of light that you are looking for. However, the quality of the light must be considered, which is related to the size. The Revolt is our standard LED Softbox. The Revolt helps the light become more diffused and evenly spread out. You can achieve a great luminosity output (three times as much as a conventional light), while reducing your electricity bill. The Revolt is an area focused light, less specific to a single spot, and which creates a more natural look and freedom of movement for the subjects or actors.

We can proudly announce that our Soft box’s CRI is 95, when most LED lights don’t even achieve CRI above 90. The colour rendering index (CRI) of a light source is a quantitative measure of its ability to reproduce the colours of various objects faithfully in comparison with an ideal light source. Therefore, our LED soft light recaptures the typical characteristics of a natural light source, which is perfect for filming, and is a worthy replacement for high-power conventional lights.

  Size Expansion and Customization

Our individual standard size softbox is 600 x 1200 mm. What’s more, different individual units can be combined or mounted into each other, through a unique system we have developed, creating a much larger soft box. This is an amazing advantage, as you will be able to enlarge or reduce the dimensions of the soft light, regarding the context under which you will be filming, without the need to bring along different products.

For the past few years, the LED technology faced the “green spike” issue or problem. This happened not because they were putting out extra green, but rather because the LEDs were deficient in creating photons in the rest of the colour spectrum.

Our R&D department reached a breakthrough in this regard, by correcting the deficiencies. Currently, our LED light is probably the first to have such high-power, while keeping the green colour controlled. As it is known, green doesn’t go along well with film shooting, since it distorts the natural colouring. Revolt Soft box, has overcome this problem.
